The full breakdown

Every step, in order, from your first lesson to test day.

Step 1
Start your EDT

EDT Lessons 1–3

  • Learn the car controls and how to move off and stop safely.
  • Build good mirror and observation habits from day one.
  • Learn gears, speed control and basic junctions.
  • Start building confidence behind the wheel.

Practise between lessons whenever you can.

Step 2
Build your driving

EDT Lessons 4–6

  • Develop roundabouts, positioning and observation.
  • Drive on busier roads and improve planning ahead.
  • Begin manoeuvres and more independent driving.
Your target by around EDT 6
Have access to an insured car and an accompanying driver, so you can practise what you learn in your lessons. This is the turning point of the whole journey.

Lessons teach you — practice builds experience.

Step 3
Practice + continue EDT

EDT Lessons 7–9

  • More independent driving and higher-speed roads.
  • Improve judgement, anticipation and traffic awareness.
  • Keep practising regularly between professional lessons.

Step 4
Complete your EDT

EDT Lessons 10–12

  • Bring all your driving skills together.
  • Work towards safe, consistent, test-standard driving.
  • Keep improving manoeuvres, roundabouts, junctions and observations.
       Important
Completing 12 EDT lessons does not automatically mean you are test ready. Everyone progresses at a different rate — and that’s completely normal.

Step 5
Get test ready

After your EDT

  • Continue driving regularly in your own or an available insured car.
  • Have your driving assessed to identify any weak areas.
  • Work on observations, manoeuvres and consistent test-standard driving.

Step 6
Test invitation received

  • Plan your final preparation together.
  • Book your pre-test lessons early — slots fill up.
  • Don’t leave all your preparation to the last minute.

Step 7
Final pre-test preparation

In the weeks before your test

  • Keep driving regularly.
  • Complete the recommended pre-test lessons.
  • Work on any weak areas and rehearse your manoeuvres.
  • Review the test-day requirements and arrive prepared.
